How To Stop The Email Madness

It took me a long time to put together a streamlined freelance process.

I avoided it, thinking I could just go with the flow with each new client and deal with things as they come up.

Why?

Because. Processes. Are. Boring.

But.

You know what else is boring? Emails.

Emails are VERY boring.

Going back & forth trying to find a time to meet with a client?

Boring.

Trying to find that client revision request in a stack of emails?

Boring.

Sending invoices?

Boring.

Reminding clients to pay that invoice?

Boring.

Learning gmail shortcuts to find certain emails faster.

Boring.

Wading through emails to find the right link to a file in dropbox or google docs, what was it again?

Boring.

There’s an epidemic people. It’s called Email Madness. And it’s spreading like wildfire.

  • HA! That is why I am so glad I found basecamp. SOOOOO tired of emails LOL

Now everyone processes can be refined. As you know I am working on my course right now so will you have stress less for limited time or will you open it back up later in the year?

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

It’s open now until May 8th and then likely reopen later this year! Get that course out there girl, it’s needed!

  • Did I hear ‘Whats a jpeg?’ Hahaha! My husband is a web designer and I have seen him go down the same path when he was freelancing. Such a time suck. The course sounds amazing , will check it out 🙂

  • I just set up my project on Basecamp last night. Sigh. It’s a total dream. I had tried other software but my brain likes things really really clean so asana or redbooth don’t really work for me.

    Loving this hilarious video!

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

Nice- it’s a little detail having a pms template, but really saves so much time and brain space not having to think about it each time. So glad you’re getting so much out of the course already!

  • Haaaaaahaaa – that video made me laugh out loud! Thank you – I needed that!

  • oh my lord Leah, this is hilarious (and sad!) Because it is so true. The worst part is that a good chunk of freelancers are losing cash and steam in this merry-go-round of madness. Sometimes they come to me thinking they want to throw in the towel on their biz…when in reality, if they could just get good systems in place, biz would not seem so freakin hard!

I can’t wait to dive into your course!

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

Yes, I remember when it first started getting out of control for me and truly thinking, this just isn’t possible. I’m glad I got control of it before giving up and I hope to help others with that too!

      • I’ve just reached that stage – this week has been insane (in a good way) but I’ve realised just how much communication is involved in freelancing. I always pride myself on getting back to people quickly but eventually volume takes over and you NEED a process. SL&I is a perfect introduction and has already helped me survive this week!

        • Leah Kalamakis Leah

I’m soo so glad Alistair. First of all that things are getting insane for you 🙂 Congrats! And second, because SL&I is helping you riiiiight when you need it most! Thank you!

  • Are you kidding me? I love this post and this video! Hysterical! Email is the number 1 type of digital clutter in my opinion and so very time consuming. It’s so good to have a process and systems built around what you do and I’m so happy there is such a resource out there for it!

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

You are the clutter queen (or clutter-stopper queen), so I’m sure you know how bad this can get! Thanks for stoppin’ by.

  • haha, love it! And loving your course so far! =D

  • “What’s a jpeg” hahah omg LOLd. That was great & email stress is THE #1 reason I got SL&I!

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

Yes! So glad to have you. And glad that little jpeg detail was obvious 🙂

  • LOVE this video Leah! So much truth to this. Every freelancer that doesn’t have processes in place should take your course. They are what saved my sanity and a more effective use of my time.

  • That. Was. Phenomenal. At first I was like “Wow, Leah’s really great at impressions!” and then I realized what was happening.

What’s better? It’s so true! Email after email after email. I’ve recommended your online course to a few freelance friends, so I hope that they take up the offer. Thanks for continuing to be A-W-E-S-O-M-E!

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

I WISH I was good at impressions! Haha, I’m the worst! Good thing for video editing software. Thank you for the recs Andrew!

  • Oh man – I’m glad I haven’t gotten to that extent of back and forth, but I agree that processes are certainly essential at maintaining sanity 😛

  • Janet

HAHAHA! Excellent! You crack me up and I luuuuuve laughing!! Can’t wait to dive into the course! 🙂 Thanks!

  • Amy

Aside from loving every post you put out, I’m enjoying the evolution of your writing style. Keep it up girl! (Also: I laughed my ass off at your video.)

  • Brilliant video! And grrreat course, of course (my horse). So glad tons of people are benefiting from it!

  • Ha! So great! I am loving the course so far. It is exactly the kick in the pants + structure that I needed to get my sh*t together. I’ve had parts of a process in place, but they don’t work together very well. Your course is helping me make the adjustments to bring it all together and it RULES! You rock lady 🙂

  • Fantastic! I was smiling through the entire video because it is SOOOO TRUE!! Lisa

  • Hilarious video, Leah! I’m still working my way through the course, but loving it so far. Thanks for being brave enough to tackle a “boring” topic.

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

Haha, you are so welcome. LOVE your avatar 🙂

  • Ha…I love love this video. That is so spot on! I already said how happy I was that I took this course. Working my way through it all now. You came up with this course at exactly the right time!
To everyone else, if you have not taken this course….do it! It is so organized it knocked my socks off!

  • Eee you’re so cute as a chipmunk voice! I love this video and the lead up to SLAI. You are so smart.

  • I really want a mini Leah (Like Ikea’s Anna) that I can have on my screen to ask questions to. Chipmunk voice optional. I’d be like Leah: what should i do with this? And Leah, how can I improve that? It’d be great.

    • Leah Kalamakis Leah

Hahaha, amazing idea. How do you think of this stuff?

  • OMG…I was laughing out loud when you got to “silence, silence, silence.” So true though.
